The Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) has two new members, both of whom were sworn in on November 14, 2018.  

Samuel H. Gill will represent the interests of the general public, replacing Kareem Abdul-Jabbar whose appointment expired. Robin Salmon, who is specially qualified in medallic art and sculpture, replaces Heidi Wastweet.

Important Role of the CCAC 

The CCAC advises the Secretary of the Treasury on theme or design proposals for circulating coinage, bullion coinage, Congressional Gold Medals, and national and other medals produced by the U.S. Mint. The committee is comprised of 11 voting members appointed by the Secretary of the Treasury. Each member serves a four-year term.  

To achieve diversity, some members must possess special skills or backgrounds, including specialization in sculpture or medallic arts; numismatics; American history; and numismatic curation.  

• One person specially qualified by virtue of his or her education, training, or experience as nationally or internationally recognized curator in the United States of a numismatic collection; 
• One person specially qualified by virtue of his or her experience in the medallic arts or sculpture; 
• One person specially qualified by virtue of his or her education, training, or experience in American history; 

• One person specially qualified by virtue of his or her education, training, or experience in numismatics; 
• Three persons who can represent the interests of the general public in the coinage of the United States; and 
• Four persons appointed by the Secretary of the Treasury on the basis of the recommendations by the House and Senate leadership. 

Samuel Gill’s Background 

Gill will be the latest member to represent to public. According to the U.S. Mint, Gill is a transportation, logistics and supply chain technology expert, who has run his own consulting business for more than two decades. He is a former executive at the American Trucking Associations in Alexandria, Virginia and started his career with Arthur Andersen and Company in Washington D.C. He is a Certified Public Accountant and has been an avid coin collector since childhood. 

Robin Salmon’s Background 

Salmon, who hails from Columbia, South Carolina, brings decades of experience to the CCAC. She has worked at Brookgreen Gardens, a sculpture garden and wildlife preserve, for more than forty years. She manages the acquisition, exhibition, and conservation of Brookgreen’s art, history, library, and archives collections. Salmon also directs the activities of the Carroll A. Campbell, Jr. Center for American Sculpture, which brings prominent sculptors to Brookgreen annually for residencies, lectures, and workshops.
